Wicklow In Song

Wicklow celebrates Three Centuries of History in Song this Summer.
This Gathering event provides an opportunity to reflect on the county’s significant role in Ireland’s story, being told through Thomas Moores’(1779-1852) Irish Melodies.

The Recital also features music celebrating Wicklow born Charles Stewart Parnell(1846-1891), the counties 19th Century Mining Heritage with a selection of songs by Enniskerry native, Ina Boyle(1889-1967), one of Ireland’s most prolific composers in the 20th Century. Jigs, reels and hornpipes will showcase Wicklow’s traditional music heritage. The Venue, Kilruddery, has featured in numerous movies. read more

Irish-American band, Solas, will be performing at SubCulture in New York City on July 31st

The group of 5-musicians aims at promoting their homeland music by including stories of immigrants past and present, while melding contemporary arrangements of age-old tunes as well as their original songs.

What : Solas, the Gaelic word for “light”, is quite a suitable name for this band whose purpose is to shine a light on traditional Irish-American music by bringing modern influences into the genre. Composed of five musicians, Solas released their eleventh album earlier this year titled “Shamrock City”, in which you can hear lots of Irish, country, and folk influence. Taking their inspiration from the story of one of the musician’s family, Shamrock City seeks to pay a tribute to the life of Irish-immigrant miners during the Industrial Revolution in the beginning of the 20th century. They aim to spread the story through their music, in addition to visuals and tales incorporated into the live show, the songs in the album reveal the spirit, tenacity and humor, but also the discrimination, corruption and other adversities immigrants had to face. read more
